Environmental Information System
The overall goal of the Environmental Information
System (EIS) component was to create a system where users can access and
manage information on biodiversity and international waters of the region
via Internet. A regional Environmental Information Management System (EIMS)
had been created which consists of interconnected websites in local
languages and in English.
Regional EIMS site http://www.tumen.com.cn
Chinese EIMS site http://www.tumen.com.cn/index2.htm
Korean EIMS site (ROK)
http://nier.go.kr/nier/tumennet/eng_index.htm
Mongolian EIMS
site

Russian EIMS
site http://www.tigis.dvo.ru/TumenProject/Start.htm
Regional project

Chinese project

Korean project site (ROK)

Mongolian project

Russian project

These websites contain a wealth of environmental and
other information of relevance to different users/sectors such as the
education sector (kindergarten to primary/secondary schools to
university), the government sector (from regulatory bodies to policy
setting), research institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs),
the business sector, local communities with computer access and the
international community. Contact information for EIS Lead Agent in China
and EIS Partner Institutions in other countries is given at the bottom of
this page.
A series of 36 environmental maps and an interactive
Geographic Information System (GIS) on CD-ROM were also produced and
widely distributed. An interactive
GIS is also available on the Internet. Finally,
a TumenNET Environmental Atlas had been prepared to complement the
information available in the TDA
and SAP.
All these products (please visit "publications"
page regarding TumenNET publications) are helpful for a wide range of
users, from planners to politicians, from schoolchildren to scholars, from
NGOs to corporations.
Cross-border compatibility and mutual acceptance of
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures were also explored under
this project component. A series of meetings were organized in order to
enhance capacity of local experts and also to raise awareness of
government officials on EIA issues. The first policy-level meeting was
organized in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in October 2001 (recommendations of
this workshop are available here).
Second meeting (Beijing, China, April 2002) was devoted to Strategic
Environmental Impact Assessment procedures related to offshore oil and gas
development and also to transboundary pipelines (from Siberia to Mongolia,
China and Korea, and from Sakhalin Island to China and Korea).
Recommendations of this workshop are available,
related materials on EIA procedures in Australia can be found at: www.ea.gov.au/assessments/eianet/index.html.
At the third workshop (Ulaanbaatar, April 2002) participants discussed
issues related to EIA procedures in the mining industry. EIA experts from
Australia and Russia have shared their expertise with Mongolian
colleagues. Information on the Best Practice Environmental Management in
Mining (Australia) can be found at the following website: www.ea.gov.au/industry/sustainable/mining/bpem.html.
